Lech Majewski

Here is a selection of posters by Polish Professor, Lech Majewski (born 1947). Lech is a Polish film and theatre director, musician, writer, poet, and painter whose posters are brilliantly bold dances between letters and images, an exciting visual assault.
Lech has been awarded many prizes for his work including acclaim at the: Biennale of Polish Poster in Katowice, International Poster Biennale in Warsaw, International Poster Exhibition in Paris, International Biennale of Theater Poster in Rzeszów and the PTWK contests for the Most Beautiful Book of the Year.

"even if the poster doesn’t change the World, it’s important to remember one thing – the poster is excellent record of place, time and event” Lech Majewski

Liuna Virardi II

Above is Liuna's contribution to a collaborative work about 'Home'.

"This is my small contribution to this big project, a sincere and visceral illustration that meant to lay bare my concept of home, an abstract concept, a feeling experienced in front of an inner landscape, intimate and profound." Liuna Virardi

Liuna Virardi I

Liuna Virardi is an Italian illustrator who lives in Toulouse France. Liuna has a bold graphic style and she has been working with simple stamps and a palette of just three colours to create a great variety of  characters for her book 'ABC of people'. I was lucky enough to meet Liuna and see her exhibition in Bologna last Tuesday.

Oren Haskins

I am sticking with my insect theme for a few more days. These digital illustrations are by London based illustrator Oren Haskins geometric, hybrid insect / alien creatures. Oren's work is Japanese in its style and he keeps to a quite muted palette.

Jim Flora

The action of Jim Flora's dynamic album covers alive with colour, text and busy patterned figures leaping all over has been described as a 'graphic traffic jam'. Jim Flora (1914-1998) designed album sleeves for RCA Victor and Columbia Records in the 1940's his work was full of vitality and dynamism, perfect for the energy of the music they represented. Both of his time and ahead of it Jim Flora's work you see the influences of the time Miro, Picasso mixed with Mexican folk art and a sugar sprinkling of bold bright imagination.

Jean Jullien II

It is Jean Jullien's propensity to draw his comical line drawings on environments that has led to his recent residency at the Wythe Hotel, New York. Though I believe he only started out drawing on their windows, the drawings are spreading. . .

As I said yesterday I see a strong Saul Steinberg influence which I love as Saul is one of my favourite graphic, comic creatives of the last century. Below are two examples of Sauls interior drawings.

Mirko Hanak

Mirko Hanak (1921-1971) was a Czechoslovakian illustrator and printer who worked with a wonderful balance of fluid line and soft water colour washes. You can see a great article about Mirko Hanak's drawings for Charlottes Web  commissioned by animator and illustrator Gene Deitch.

Mara Piccione I

Mara Piccione is a Dutch illustrator, graphic designer and printmaker who works in mono and screenprinting. I was extremely taken last week with her interpretation of Roald Dahl's The Minpins because it was so different from the original and I loved the boldness of the design.

Amin Akbari II

People blooming, growing and just being are strong themes in Amin Akbari's works.
"I was born in a small city in the north-east of Iran. My childhood and adolescence were accompanied by aggression, living in nature, hiking, fishing, fear and a little radio whose voice I slept with every night." Amin Akbari
