Can Sun 小红书 is a Chinese artist currently studying sculpture at the Royal College of Art currently he is taking every day objects and reinventing/ forming/designing them to make you look and look again, and enjoy the beauty.

Tania Font's latest series of ceramic sculptures feels so pertinent and poignant with too many constant wars, culture wars and damage, these silent figures with their heads broken and thoughts exposed are too vulnerable and stoic, I want to give them a hug, take them home and let them heal.

Yin Xiuzhen

'Weapon' 2003-2007 by Yin Xiuzhen 尹秀珍. Yin Xiuzhen creates sculptures often using domestic items as part of the construction.

Sue and Pete Hill

These wonderful fish, made by Cornish brother and sister team Pete and Sue Hill, were suspended in the forest glen at Kelburn, beautiful in their movement and reflections of the environment.

“When the ice melts” by Sue and Pete Hill, imagines a time, perhaps in the distant future, perhaps sooner, when our familiar landscapes disappear under the sea, as the melting of ice caps accelerates. The fish are made from recycled aluminum litho plate. They respond sensitively to weather – pointing the wind direction like weather-vanes and darting as the wind works the trees, stretching their suspension cords tight."

Rui Miragaia

The last few weeks I have been focusing on Portugal because I visited Lisbon last week, everything so far has been from research and now I am going to share a few personal finds and experiences of the city.
One evening we stumbled upon this giant, kinetic, paper mache rooster sculpture by Rui Miragaia. It is situated in Martim Moniz Square, Lisbon. As it is outside and has been exposed to the weather for a number of months, it is a beautiful, if slightly disheveled bird made even more magical by its survival in the sun, the wind and the rain.

Lucy Emma Wayman II

Yesterday in the bright sunlight Lucy Wayman's work illuminated by bright shafts of sunlight light the room with chains of texture and light.

Simon Ward I

Simon Ward makes ceramics but  his ceramics are made into large displays and installations. One of Simon's main themes is taking ordinary functional objects and giving them a new role with their meaning and function elevated.

The throw away, the mundane and the common are re-positioned, and given center stage and inspiring re-evaluation. You can see Simon's display of small porcelain birds with blue and white glaze at VAS until February 28th 2015.

Marjo Mommersteeg

Marjo Mommersteeg currently has an exhibition of painting and sculpture in Ingeborg until the 20th May, it looks wonderful so if you are anywhere near pop in and say hello. These images are of Marjo's rawer sculptures. Often Marjo's work is very brightly coloured, and in a surrealist tradition she draws out of the rough logs and drift wood, a magical world of her imagination.

Elephant Wagon/Circus Train (James Chedburn) 2012

James Chedburn is an artist, sculptor and teacher who's preoccupation has been with motion. 
His complex automata look appealingly simple but their wonderful motion  is highly engineered and incredible. You can see further videos of his work and creative process here.

Donald Baechler III

 

These are some of  Donald Baechler's cast bronze sculptures of plants. For my class I will be cutting the silhouette of their drawings out in thick cardboard, the students will then be covering this in paper clay (newsprint that has been ripped up soaked in hot water and blended to a pulp). I am looking forward to the results. Depending on how successful they are, later I may get them to try some figures using the same style and technique.
