Rob Mulholland

I am late today as I have been away at Kelburn Garden Party and failed to schedule today's post. So for a change, I will show you some of the things I saw last weekend at the festival and these works by sculptor Rob Mulholland who has been commissioned to create a permanent installation at Kelburn Glen.

Jenny Pope

'Worry Stones -One months supply' by Jenny Pope made me smile last night at the VAS opening as it was such a funny idea and a beautiful collection of beach combings beautifully worked and presented.
The annual VAS exhibition is a fantastic representation of art, design and craft in Scotland with stunning paintings, tapestries, jewelry furniture and sculpture, it runs until February 28th so if you are in Edinburgh and enjoy this eclectic and exciting show.

"Walking, in particular by the sea, is a constant source of inspiration. I am an avid beachcomber and earlier work reflects ideas around found objects as worry beads, collecting man-made relics, and trying to make sense of remnants of information."  Jenny Pope 

Hassan Haazer Moshar حسن حاضرمشار

Hassan Haazer Moshar (1923- ) is a self taught Iranian artist, a painter and sculptor, here are some examples of his sculpture. I have chosen his birds though many of his sculptures are figures.

"All my paintings are natural colours, the colors of walnut juice and other forest trees. Myamyzm and juice with oil paints I use for sculptures. "He says with a laugh:" It is the experience of all my years."

Spencer Byles I

Feathery Friday, people are getting their wings ready here. Many of my friends are leaving work today permanently and some are just stretching their wings ready for the summer holidays.
These beautiful feathers are by artist Spencer Byles, who last year completed 'a Year in a French Forest' making site specific sculpture and art. 
Spencer is a dynamo of creative energy and these feathers are part of a larger story and installation, a site specific piece constructed from paper, a material that has been a mainstay of Spencer's work in the past. 

Anna Gillespie

Anna Gillespie forms people from leaf litter and acorn cups a strange alchemy that creates wonderful haunting pieces of art.

Misaki Kawai I

The irreverence and fun that Misaki Kawai obviously has when making art reminds me of Michel Gondry. She makes paintings, sculptures, installations and zines in her home/studio in New York.

Mary Button Durrell

Mary Button Durrell makes sculptures from tissue paper and flour paste. Shapes like giant loofah's or wasps nests, they are fabulous. Mary's latest works are moving away from the natural colour of the paper into explorations in very subtle colour they are wonderful! (thank you Oh jealous one)

Denis Bonnes

Denis Bonnes makes these wild people and totems from scraps of wood and assembled junk, creating exuberant people full of life and colour. It is my first day back at work so I feel like I look like the top figure.

Jan Brown

Here are some examples of Jan Brown's wonderful anthropomorphic bird sculptures and drawings. Jan Brown is a distinguished artist in Canberra, and has been an inspirational artist teacher and arts activist. unfortunately her works are scarce on the Internet as they have great humour and observation.

Deborah Barrett

Deborah Barrett was a naive artist who worked in mixed media to create her humorous, observed art works, in both sculpture and painting.

Kai Hugel

I wish that I could find more of this sculptors work to show you, but these are the only two pieces that I have managed to find of Kai Hugel's works.

Fantastic Present

There are heroes in your life, people who hold a wee place in your heart, George Wyllie is one of mine, and a message in a bottle was waiting on my desk this morning. This was a daft present to a friend of mine Tom Pratt from George Wyllie ( a paper boat in a bottle) and he has wonderfully and so kindly given it to me. Thanks Tom I have a smile from ear to ear.

Guy Taplin

Guy Taplin, what can I say except love! No, I can say more, I absolutely love his large flocks, but I could not get a clear enough image to share them with you, explore the web and you will see what I mean. Guy has an exhibition at Couroux and Couroux until the 14th of April.

Anne-Elina Alho

Paper like skin, . . . with skin like crepe paper. Paper is very skin like and sculptor Anne-Elina Alho uses its wispy skin like qualities in her strange and evocative sculptures.

Kristina Johlige

I adore this delicate work by Kristina Johlige utilising seeds to creat these incredible textural peices that you want to touch.

Carolien Broesen

Dutch artist Carolien Broersen's art box is full of mussel shells, sticks, seeds and fragments of nature with which she sculpts into art that is intriguing and inspiring.

Daniel Brickman

American artist, sculptor and installation artist Daniel Brickman creates beauty from his pyrotechnical tendencies using paper and matches. Some of these works were exhibited at the Amateras annual paper art exhibition at Sophia, Bulgaria.

Cathedral of Chairs by Tadashi Kawamata

Reminicent of the work of Doris Salcedo, I love this beehive of chairs (image) by Japanese artist Tadashi Kawamata an artist who's work extends and challanges areas of design, art and architecture. His work is very inspiring have a look, make sure you see his tree huts.
