Joana Estrela I

"These embroideries were part of my graduation project. They are illustrations for the tale of Saint Quitéria, from Felgueiras, and an interpretation of a traditional craft from the same place: Terra de Sousa embroidery. According to the tale, Quitéria was beheaded by her fiancé in Monte das Maravilhas (Mount of Wonders), where her sanctuary is now. The miracle happened when, after having her head cut off, the saint picked it up from the floor and carried it in her arms, walking to the grave on her own two feet." Joana Estrela
Joana Estrela is a freelance illustrator based in Portugal.

Nahid Kazemi IV

Strange how I thought Nahid Kazemi's work looked like textiles and then I find this beautiful book in her portfolio, with composite print and textile illustrations for 'Ghech and Gheck I am a tailor'.

There was an old woman with eyes on her knees . . .

I finished this picture last weekend on the train to Yorkshire. It is very appropriate today, my eyes are sore after hours of searching through old photographs, due to someone attempting to steal copyright on one of my personal photos.
I hope that you all have a happy and restful weekend and thank you all for your support and encouragement.

There was an old lady . . .

There was an old lady who never said a word,
You could see her daily, walking a giant ladybird.
One day off it flew . . .
The old lady flew too . . .
The ladybird flying with her old bird
The screams and wails were the loudest ever heard.

There was an old fisherman of Pittenweem

This piece I started at the end of last summer, it took ages to complete simply because it was left when I returned to work, after the summer holidays.
The lace of the beard was dyed with turmeric, the worms were off cuts from a students work. It is inspired by a the strange concept of keeping bait worms warm. I am sure I remember that the fishermen kept them in their mouths to keep them warm and lively, a horrible idea/ memory that I have from when I was young.

There was an old lady of Saline

And here she is 'The old lady of Saline' beautifully evil, and lovely and colourful.
I loved doing the details adding lace to her neck and hands for wrinkles, chain stitch cable down the front of a boys jumper, the little girls plats and the metalic zimmer frame.

Illustration Friday 'Secret'

This week I decided to try submitting an illustration to Illustration Friday. The subject for this week was secret.
I have made a textile illustration, as that seems to be the way that I am enjoying working at the moment.
I am hoping to be able to do many more things like this during the summer when I am free from the responsibilities of  work.
