Gonçalo Viana

Gonçalo Viana's first authored picture book 'Troca-Tintas', which was published in 2019 by Orfeu Negro, is about colours being swapped and messed around and the resulting confusion and unhappiness. Humour surrealism and imagination abound in this book with wonderful colour and graphic style.

'Once upon a time two friends, an orange dog, a red parrot and a ... white tree? It can not be! Let's start all over ...'

Marta Madureira IV

In the time of murmuring autumn skies, full of the incredible synchronised flights of starlings this image by Portuguese illustrator, Marta Madureira is a treasure. You can almost hear the wingbeats and the squeals of the young excited birds.

Ana Biscaia I

Portuguese illustrator Ana Biscaia's work has a visceral darkness to it, the style of fast rough sketching and scribbled dark tones and finger smudges adds a humanity and bleakness. These two images are from a collaborative book on childhood memories.

Joana Estrela I

"These embroideries were part of my graduation project. They are illustrations for the tale of Saint Quitéria, from Felgueiras, and an interpretation of a traditional craft from the same place: Terra de Sousa embroidery. According to the tale, Quitéria was beheaded by her fiancé in Monte das Maravilhas (Mount of Wonders), where her sanctuary is now. The miracle happened when, after having her head cut off, the saint picked it up from the floor and carried it in her arms, walking to the grave on her own two feet." Joana Estrela

Luisa Cortesão

I work hard to blog here every day and to facilitate this I try to stick to a theme for a few days or a week to help with the flow and continuity of the page. However, I am interrupting this current theme of Czech illustration because I just watched an inspiring film from Portugal and at the end was bereft, as I found out Luisa Cortesão (1951-2016) the vibrant narrator and protagonist had passed away in January. So here is the film and some examples of this enigmatic ladies work.

Luisa had spent her life working in endocrinology retiring when she was 59. She was married to an art critic Alexandre Pomar the son of the painter Júlio Pomar and they had two daughters.
