Hazel Terry: Sweet Printed Owls

On Tuesday last week, I took a print workshop where we used sweets. Here are some owls that I created using liquorice allsorts and midget gems. I have a similar workshop today with a different group of people and I hope it is as much fun.

Coffee Owls

I have been using coffee as a medium it has a warmth, graininess and unpredictability that I love and have used to create a series of owls. The staining changes with time, maturing to a characterful patina not unlike using rust to dye fabrics.

Owls and home

While I have been away over the last two weeks I went home to the Norfolk broads and was very privileged to share some early mornings with barn owls, which I haven't seen in the wild since I was twelve. These incredible birds are almost like butterflies in their silent daybreak fluttering sweeps of the marsh. Their long wings and dexterous flight was wonderful to observe.

I have been playing with owls these are drawn using layers of white wax crayon and pencil. I like the way each one has such an individual character.

Mattisj

A single photograph because I adore it. It is the surreal blue of those amazing chicks contrasted with the piercing yellow of the parents eyes, just amazingly beautiful. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mattisj

Owl tamers

My Childminder's daughter, Claire, looks after large birds of prey, particularly Owl's. Every year when she visits she brings an owl chick with her which for the past three years has been a real treat. Freya has had her glove on all summer pretending to have her own owl, so today I made her an owl to sit on her glove. Of course once one was completed she wanted another one for her friend, so it has been a very busy owl making day.
