Sano Yoko

An illustration from Christmas in WWII by Sano Yoko published in 1997 by Akane Shobo. Sano Yoko (1938–2010)  was born in Beijing, China, she studied printmaking in Berlin and settled in Japan becoming a very successful author illustrator of children's books. This work reminds me of Allan Ahlberg's 'The Run Away Dinner' of 2006.

Lisk Feng

I love this illustration, from the novel When Marnie, by Lisk Feng because this is what happens to us every night in the winter at dusk. The gulls glide silently out to the sea over our house no flapping no noise, a quiet perfection. Lisk Feng is originally from China but now lives and works in New York, she is currently one of the nominees of The Young Illustrator Award 2014.

Xia Nan

Last night I went with Freya to catch a glimpse of the wonderful, larger than life Chinese warrior lanterns by Xia Nan are being displayed in Edinburgh for a week until February the 7th to mark the Chinese New Year. The multi-coloured lanterns were created by Chinese artist Xia Nan for the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. They are very enigmatic, and powerful, lighting up the Old College quadrangle. If you can, brave the weather, and go and see them.

Yangyang Pan I

Yangyang Pan is a painter now based in Canada she works in heavy impasto and intense colours that are exuberant and vivid. "Inspiration comes from antiques, fashion, interiors, landscapes...ANYWHERE WHERE THERE IS COLOR! Sometimes I will see two colors paired together that you would not expect and it makes me want to go start painting. Each painting really comes from a different place." Yangyang Pan

Sanyu II

Some beautiful animal paintings from Sanyu (1901-1966).

Sanyu I

Stunning pale textured paintings from Sanyu (1901-1966). Paintings that have a haze of soft brush strokes that make you want to dive in.
Sanyu was one of the first Chinese artists to train in Paris after the May the Fourth Movement in China. He never returned to China, falling in love with Paris and its lifestyle. He died aged 65 in obscurity and poverty.

Chen Hangfeng

Yesterday I went on a mini trip to St Andrews with Introduction to Creative Industries students and Furniture students to see an exhibition by Chinese artist Chen Hangfeng an artist who's work in paper cuts is based on long traditions but which at the hands of Chen Hangfeng has absorbed the modern iconography of logos and branding. Chen Hangfeng's work traverses the usual boundaries of art craft and design as he works with film, installation rugs and paper cuts.
In this exhibition I particularly liked the mirrored book forms which expanded his designs, see bottom two images.
