Collages leaves

Still not quite sure what is going to come of my autumn leaf collection, but I have been using them to collage, I would love to work with kids with this technique and see what they would make.

Autumn's Elephants are trumpeting

Autumn arrived early in London, the hot summer has stressed the trees and so many are undressing early for the relief of winter. Horse chestnuts are always the first to cast off their large hand like leaves. As I wondered the streets and during my day at kew I gathered and pressed the early bounty of leaves. I brought them home to Scotland and have been able to spend part of my day playing and expanding my herd of autumn elephants.

Playing with autumn

I was working away from home last week in Ayrshire, it was good to take time in the limited daylight around work and explore the town, it's river and seascapes as well as catch and play with the autumn colour.

Windfall bed

I am late as yesterday was an epic DIY day which included a massive clearing of the garden in anticipation of a storm that never really materialised. There were lots of windfalls to be gathered and in everyone, someone had made themselves at home in a cave of fragrant apple, snoozing the cold windy days away.
Hopefully today will be a little less DIY and more art, indeed more apple beds.

Studying III

Last paper challenge from this week.
I wanted to create something to celebrate Autumn and also to highlight the need to plant trees, for so many reasons, but to keep the colours of Autumn vibrant with variety of species.

The greedy king . . . playing with his gold

I am clutching at what little day light we have available and the last of the leaves before they blow away, so I did this in my lunch hour.
The leaves on my cherry tree were so golden this morning and I wondered what they would look like as gold coins  . . . according to Finlay they look like pringles
(I think he was hungry).

Autumn Reds

I went out to buy coffee this morning and on the way back from the shop noticed all these leaves on the ground and had to pick them up and do something with them, they are like thin ice you can hardly touch them as they all instantly fall to pieces.
I have been wanting to play with leaves and little Red Riding Hood so this was a good opportunity.

Jenny Lee Fowler

Continuing in the exploration of leaves as a medium here are a few of Jenny Lee Fowler's leaf portraits. "I'm a traditional freehand silhouette artist, which means that most of the work I do is cut through close observation-no tracing, no Photoshop, no light and shadow. I've always enjoyed the slow way." Jenny Lee Fowler

Painting leaves on autumn days

Freya and I collected lots of leaves at the weekend, and my students did too, which was great. Today having pressed the leaves for a couple of days, my students got the chance to repaint nature, it was a lovely relaxing fun project (tonight Freya and I are going to have a go too).

Autumn

Above: the apple
It is autumn, the garden is wild, throwing fruit and vegetables at us in a last abundant spurt of life. The apple tree has grown an apple that donks me on the head every time I walk up the path (and no I still haven't learnt to avoid it!). So today I am going to try and reap and tidy as much as I can. Here are some images from yesterday, have a lovely Sunday.
