Duke Riley I

Duke Riley has reinvented scrimshaw for the 21st century human and instead of etching biological finds whale bones and narwal teeth he is etching out painted plastic debris, the stories linked to some of the debris and the etching is wonderful.

Above: 'This flipper was discovered in the belly of a tiger shark caught by a commercial fisherman in 1995 off the coast of Florida. It has been hanging up in a garage in Cape Cod since then until it was gifted to the studio last year to be scrimshawed.'

Chris Jordan II

Chris Jordan has now entered into the arena of my hero's, they are a select and precious few. This is his Hokusai's "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" created from tones of plastic retrieved from the Pacific ocean.
To be exact 2.4 million pieces of plastic, as that is the estimated pounds of plastic that enter the worlds oceans every hour.
Strange how I was dwelling on this island of human detritus just the other day and how it is madness that it is not being dredged up and recycled or disposed of in a less random/damaging way.
Chris has done a TED talk and this latest project has been written about on Inhabitat.

Spout...ing good ideas, Nicolas le Moigne

It is always the simplicity of good ideas that takes your breath away, this one made me audibly gasp. Designed by Nicolas le Moigne produced by vice versa.
