Kitty Jones

I have been away, so I am sorry I am late today, however while away I found some screen prints by Kitty Jones. These are a few examples from her series of British birds.
"I am interested in the interaction between man and nature; this leads me to depict birds in my work. Birds form a direct relationship with man - wherever we are there are always birds to be seen. Birds have captured man's imagination for thousands of years and form a large part of our mythology." Kitty Jones
Kitty is an Edinburgh based artist who works at the independent Leith School of Art.

Screen printing

Top Linda Ritchie, Below Jordan Cottrill
For a few weeks now at work, we have been exploring basic printing techniques and they have to be basic as we have such limited materials. But in a way this is good as it means the students can explore the possibilities raised further at home.
This method of screen printing requires a frame of some sort, in this instance an embroidery hoop, some fine meshed nylon and PVA glue. You can not wash it (it softens the glue) so it is a one use screen but you can make many prints if you are careful.
We have been screen printing mainly patterns onto calico for upholstery, but today the students choose some silhouettes of musicians. Even while the glue was drying they made great shadows in the sun.
This made me think of the possibilities of something like this on fabric which could cast shadows on the skin.

Rob Ryan

Another treat from my recent trip, was being able to visit Rob Ryan's shop on Columbia Road, London. It was a case of me looking up from children and flowers and asking Lizzy 'is that what I think it is ?' and then running to spend a few seconds with someone who's work I love. I wanted to share an image of a paper cut in the shop, but I cannot find it, so you need to go and have a look yourselves. Rob also has a blog and website and a shop at etsy for you to explore.
