Lisbeth Zwerger

Also at Bologna I had the fortune to be able to see Lisbeth Zwerger's interpretation of 'Alice in Wonderland' from 1999. This is a much more serious, contemplative and for me, disturbing version of the story.
I think this is mainly due to Alice's lack of expression. Because of the very calm, interpretation in dreamy watercolour washes, this work is very distant and removed from the viewer. Making you feel just like you are in a dream, a silent observer unable to intervene.

  3. I own her version of The Wizard of Oz (1996) which is similar in feeling and beautifully illustrated, It came with a clever pair of green glasses which makes the reader feel like being in the Emerald City. Must acquire more of her books. I forgot how enchanted her illustrations are.
