Quentin Gréban

Another illustrator with the wonderful structure and soft watercolour of Lisbeth Zwerger, in his Pinocchio book is French illustrator Quentin Gréban.

I did think when researching Pinocchio illustrators that Lisbeth Zwerger, would have worked on this subject, but she hasn't. However her aesthetic is carried in these illustrations by Veronica Ruffato.

Also at Bologna I had the fortune to be able to see Lisbeth Zwerger's interpretation of 'Alice in Wonderland' from 1999. This is a much more serious, contemplative and for me, disturbing version of the story.
I think this is mainly due to Alice's lack of expression. Because of the very calm, interpretation in dreamy watercolour washes, this work is very distant and removed from the viewer. Making you feel just like you are in a dream, a silent observer unable to intervene.

Lisbeth Zwerger's drawings are so structurally stunning, add this to her surreal imagination and you have a true genius of illustration, which is why she is one of the most honored illustrators alive today. 
These works are from The Wizard of OZ by L.Frank Baum published in 1996 by North South Books. It constantly frustrates me that books like this go out of print and then are virtually impossible to get. You would think in this day and age it would be easier to print to demand or something, to make these classics more easily accessible.
