The girl and the goatherd: or, This and that and thus and so by Evaline Ness, published in 1970. 

The story for this is dated and unpleasant I find in that the supposedly 'ugly' girl at the start of the book is drawn as a Native American and her transformation to 'beauty' looks very much European American. Also stories of girls wanting to be visually beautiful never appeal to me, an inner beauty and kindness are so much more important in everyone. The story follows the girl achieving the endless impossible demands of the witch, with the help of a goat herder whom she never thanks. However, the illustrations are sometimes absolutely wonderful, the witch is fabulous, as are the goats, trees and layout.

'Fierce the Lion' by Evaline Ness published in 1980. It has been an Evaline Ness week but I make no excuse I love her colour, drawing and the layering of print. This book is an absolute beauty.
