Charles van Sandwyk

The Wind in the Willows, with illustrations by Charles van Sandwyk, was published in late 2005 by the folio society. The book took two years for Charles to illustrate, having spent months researching in England drawing the landscape and native animals. Charles Van Sandwyk was born in South Africa surrounded by art and nature. He loved classical children's books published in the early 1900s, such as Beatrix Potter's "Peter Rabbit" stories and James Barrie's Peter Pan
After emigrating to Canada with his parents at age 11, he found refuge from the culture shock in fairy tales and fantasy, becoming a devotee of Arthur Rackham's illustrations, whose influence you can clearly see in the traditionally elegant illustrations of Charles.
