As Italy fell under the grasp of Fascism in the early 1920's the character of Pinocchio was reinterpreted to push a Pro-Fascist propaganda.
"Pinocchio in 1923, who inflicts lesson after lesson upon the cowardly Red, forcing him to gulp down castor oil, the ritual humiliating punishment of intellectuals and other opponents to the regime." Giovanni Tiso
This use of Pinocchio may seem odd to us now, with the main feature we recognise as Pinocchio being his deceitfulness and his lie revealing nose growth. For the fascists it was the perfect propaganda vehicle, to capture the minds of children into the fascist agenda.
