I found this strange and charming book in a charity shop in London, it is 'On the Wing', published in1994, a book of poems and illustrations by Douglas Florian a New York artist. This is his illustration of The Dipper and below its acompanying poem.
The Dippers
Through splash and spray
Of waterfalls
Skip the little dippers.
I think that they
Would gladly trade
Their oily wings for flippers
Inside a stream
They swim supreme,
For minutes if they wish -
Those funny little songbirds
Who think that they are fish.
