I ordered such a lovely book this week, 'The Problem with Pierre' is a gentle story by G.K Smouha, of two lonely men Bertram and Alan. Bertram decides to get a cat for company, but cats have their own minds and needs.

Pierre the cat prefers the cosy messiness of Alan's home and moves in, leaving poor Bertram lonely and unhappy.

In Alan and Bertram's attempts to make Pierre the cat happy they end up breaking down the walls between their homes and create a new home where they can all live happily together. 

This is a wonderful book with beautiful illustrations by Suzanna Hubbard that remind me of the work of both Roger Duvoisin and Mairi Hedderwick.

Sketchbooks of Suzanna Hubbard telling the story of Martha Brown of Dorset the last woman to be publicly hanged. Martha Brown had suffered an adulterous and violent husband but was hung for his murder and the spectacle of her death had attracted a crowd that had included a young Thomas Hardy and Blake Morrison.
Suzanna Hubbard's simple style suits perfectly the telling of historic tales, the pared down style matching the simpler, uncluttered lives of historic figures.
