Josephine Birch II

'Selkie' by Josephine Birch is a beautiful, delicate, wordless picture book published by Starfish Bay, which tells the tale of love and friendship across boundaries.

In a small village by the sea the fishermen are full of tales and myths of monsters, pirates and mermaids but there is one myth that may be true… the selkie.

Hazel Terry: Demonstrate!

There are so many things being eroded by our current cohort of politicians, that took generations to fight for. Horrific inconceivable things; such as the removal of human rights and the right to demonstrate are being pushed through by the government in England.

This at a time, when so often people of my age are being asked why we didn't act earlier to protest or demonstrate on so many issues that are threatening our lives and basic rights. It doesn't seem to wash when you say you have been demonstrating for these things all your life.

So this weeks street collage focused on demonstrations and using historic photographs  to highlight current issues by replacing the placards with modern ones.

I went out on Friday morning feeling quite positive the government had lost two by-elections, things looked a tiny bit better.

Here in the UK our media is biased to state side, European news has been virtually none existent in this country, which is I believe why some people voted brexit, they had no understanding of Europe, its peoples and what the EU did.

Anyway by Friday evening, the news from America was of course the overturning of Wade and Roe by Trump's heavily weighed Republican supreme court, this made the work that I am currently creating resonate even more.
That and the crazy news that from tomorrow 28th of June we in the UK can be arrested for even an individual protest and fined 2.5 thousand pounds.
So images, like the one of a woman going out in the streets of Nizhny Novgorod, Russia with a piece of blank paper and being arrested in seconds could well happen here very soon.

Who knows what madness this week will bring but I wish health happiness and creativity to you all.

Hazel Terry: Child's Play

This medium has definitely gripped me this summer. I love searching for images and then combining these with elements of reality and the tiny bits of exterior that I find on my walks.

They seem to reflect the desperate times we are living in, post covid and brexit in the UK . Whilst also highlighting the degradation of our environment, for us, our children and all the living things we share this world with. We are suffering on the east coast of Scotland with many terrible losses due to Avian flu and the wonderful gannet population has been devastated.

I suppose for many reasons, I am very sad just now, but somehow putting these gritty collages together gives me joy.

Katie Fu

Observational sketches from Glasgow by Katie Fu.

This is an observational picture book documenting what I saw when I first arrived in Glasgow and spent a whole day wandering the streets alone. As a foreigner with a different cultural background, it was a new experience for me. Through my illustrations, I wanted to record my first impressions of the Glasgow cityscape and reflect on the relationship between people and the city. Katie Fu

Yesterday

Yesterday it was my birthday, I am in my mid fifties, I don't know how that happened, there seems to be no chronology to ageing, suddenly you reach a number beyond your wildest dreams or dreads. Everyone needs you at this age, you are stretched to that point, (hopefully) just before breaking. So on a day of a little celebration, I thought the best way for me to approach the day would be an art project. It was the best way, for my head, for peace of mind and for celebration.

I chose 'Birthday Cake' as my theme and following on from last weekends street collage workshop with Nuart Aberdeen Festival, I spent the day nipping out into my small town and photographing tiny bits of it with even tinier bits of paper. I hope you like them, they do weirdly show exactly how I was feeling.

Above: We are but petals and confetti caught in a cobweb.

This art form makes you look in the crevices and the lost spots and savour the texture and flotsam and jetsam, where a fag butt or a cobweb become integral to the piece of art.
