I love these invisible mammals hidden from sight under the ground and I was pondering on their presence or absence last week as I traveled from the highlands to the lowlands of Scotland. The highlands were abundant with mole hills, the visible evidence of their spring excavations, the low lands noticeably devoid of their presence as the plows chopped through the acres and intensive farming of oilseed  rape clears the soil of worms. It made me think of the velvet mole as an indicator of healthy soil.
