Jylian Gustlin

I am teaching Life Drawing to my Introduction to Creative Arts, to my NC Fashion and to my senior schools student groups. I have to say I love it! The improvement in drawing standards is so rapid, the observational skills, the anatomy and understanding of weight distribution and balance and most of all the consideration and understanding of the human condition.
Art schools are moving away from this area of study and the result is that students are coming out with much depleted drawing and looking skills. We are losing the vital foundations that were the essence of an art education.
I hear colleagues belittling life drawing as archaic and unnecessary but I personally feel it is an essential  learning process.

These drawings by Jylian Gustlin are just wonderful, the gestural marks and the quality of the lines are compelling and beautiful.

  1. Inspiring. I absolutely love these - the whole sketchbook on her site. Need to draw again!

  2. I totally agree with you. I think much of art now is about the concept and the idea and much less about the execution and the quality of the piece. I think those pieces will fall away, and that "unknown" artists with great skills and execution as well as wonderful ideas will be the ones that will be seen in 100 years.
