Boredom

I am often referring to play on the art room, this is not because I do not value hard work and study in drawing and painting, or skill, but because I worry about imagination and creativity in this digital multi -media age of zero tolerance to boredom.
Boredom to me is an amazing thing in this fast world and it is a state to be nurtured, as when one is truly bored the mind dreams up great plans and inventions, ideas that sparkle and generate more ideas, dreams and plans.
This is some of my work from a project using ripped up cardboard boxes to draw and paint on. Cheap/free materials are also really important. Too often people worry about having the correct tool box. There is no tool box in art apart from your imagination and thoughts. These are the materials to sharpen and nurture.

  1. Hear hear! I really really agree with what you say here, especially your first point. I often think I'd do much better on a remote island or at the end of a dirt road somewhere. And it reminds me of what Steve Jobs said on the subject:
“I’m a big believer in boredom...Boredom allows one to indulge in curiosity and out of curiosity comes everything ... All the [technology] stuff is wonderful, but having nothing to do can be wonderful, too.”

I agree with your second point too, up to a point— cheap/free can be sp liberating. But good materials have their place, as long as they don't inhibit the artist.
    2¢! x

  2. Boredom is a wonderful thing as you say. While being bored you might kick away a stone, when out pops a crab, who scuttles across the sand into a tide pool, where he buries himself under the sand. Now, if you hadn't been bored you may never have kicked the stone in the first place and made such discoveries!

  3. When I was a child I used to have many, long parenthesis of boredom. I was forced to spend a couple of months each summer in a very isolated country house, surrounded by adults. Those sunny, endless afternoos of silence (with the exception of the bzzzzz bzzzzz of flies and the rustle of the wind) have undoubtely been the source of my imagination and of my secret wish of re-creating a world of my own, that could possibly break and still conciliate with all that apparent emptiness...
