This first illustration actually made me wince. 'Аня сердится' (Anya is Angry). by Katia Shumkova is refreshingly about an angry, spirited, naughty little girl. Anya is trouble and finds it hard to make friends, until one day she is given a drum and her love for this instrument makes her happy and accepted. 
The story reminds me of another "girl power" book, "The Paper Bag Princess" by Robert Munsch. I used to buy that book and give it to people I worked with to give to their young daughters.(Although I bought it for my young son --- good lesson on princes behaving badly!) The funniest? anecdote was one Mom had to stop her daughter from calling someone a "bum" every time she was mad. We need more books on "edgy" girl power.
