Kenna Moser I

Kenna Moser is a Canadian artist who works with encaustic techniques using beeswax to layer drawn and painted imagery in her works with garden specimens.
Her works are like letters from The Minpins a book I am rereading at the moment with Freya.

Renato Bertini

Portraits and life studies by Italian painter Renato Bertini.  I like the space and composition in his studies the muted colour and the careful selection of key details and focus points.

Golucho II

Amazingly arresting drawings by Golucho that catch you and hold you in their gaze. These drawings made me think about the growing invisibility of elderly in our society and culture, because of this vacuum they seem all the more powerful.

Golucho (Miguel Angel May) I

Golucho is an incredible Spanish painter who has been painting since he was 12, he is now in his sixties and has exhibited across the world but still remains relatively unknown outside his native country. Golucho's work has a powerful realism that engages and captivates the viewer whilst creating empathy with the subjects depicted.
He is a painter of humanity and the human soul.

Marion Barraud II

Little parties delicately constructed by Marion Barraud from translucent layers of watercolour and coloured pencil.

Marion Barraud I

Marion Barraud is a French illustrator from Nantes and these are her charming red monsters, part of a humorous, fun portfolio. Marion often uses delicate layered washes of watercolour to create her imaginings.

Sara Cunha I

These character trees by Portuguese illustrator Sara Cunha have bold graphic design. But what I really like about these characters is their shadows. They remind me of a workshop I went to 5 years ago with Italian shadow puppet master Fabrizio Montecchi where he warned of the shadow's habit of mocking you behind your back.
"I love to work with silhouettes and with this technique I like how I can hyde a character behind another and just reveal a part of it through the shadow. It's mysterious and also leaves room for the viewer to construct multiple narratives and to discover the semantics of the shapes.
This can also be a very "theatrical" technique that can be very rich in animation too. It is possible to work and play with many layers, light and shadows." Sara Cunha

Xia Nan

Last night I went with Freya to catch a glimpse of the wonderful, larger than life Chinese warrior lanterns by Xia Nan are being displayed in Edinburgh for a week until February the 7th to mark the Chinese New Year. The multi-coloured lanterns were created by Chinese artist Xia Nan for the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. They are very enigmatic, and powerful, lighting up the Old College quadrangle. If you can, brave the weather, and go and see them.

Galya Popova I

I love this monochrome still Life by Gayla Popova. It is not typical of Russian artist Gayla Popova' style which is usually very bright and illustrative. You can see the rest of her portfolio here.

hazelterry.com

At long last I can announce that my website is open.
I thought yesterday was an auspicious day to launch it as it was 'the art room plants' birthday.
Many thanks to Ana Aceves and Danny Sugar of Sugar Cube Studios  and to Natascha who introduced us.
It will still need lots more work put into it, the shop needs to be stocked and portfolios tidied, photographed and documented, but it is a start, wish me luck.

It's My Birthday and I'm 5!

The Art Room Plant, amazingly, is five years old today.
I want to thank all of the wonderful creative people who's work makes this such a great 'gallery' of inspiration, art and illustration. It brings me great joy to share their work and to meet the followers and visitors who leave comments, as well as people who contact me through other mediums.
Thank you all.
