Sunny Day, painting day II

Raw, unstretched and still needing whiskers.
Bellissimo is here with his trophy pigeon legs, to often that is all I find left of a pigeon except a puff of feathers. Beanz has her broken eye and her sunshine colours and demeanour. I may stretch them but I don't know, for now they are stuck to the wall with tape and Freya is making moves on the Bellissimo one for her room.

Bill Traylor

Having Mentioned Bill Traylor in the previous post I thought it best to share some of Bill Traylor's wonderful cats and dogs, I think what makes these works even more enegmatic is the random shapes of the scraps of paper on which Bill drew them.

Bill Traylor (1854?–1949) was born into slavery on a plantation in Alabama. After emancipation, he continued to live and work on the plantation until sometime before 1928, when he moved permanently to Montgomery. There he worked as a laborer and briefly in a shoe factory until he was physically unable to continue, then began receiving modest government assistance. Under the challenging conditions of Depression-era Alabama, Traylor survived on the streets in the then primarily black enclave of Monroe Avenue (now called Monroe Street). He slept first in the storage room of a funeral parlor, then in a shoe repair shop, and spent his days sitting on the sidewalks, creating the more than 1,200 drawings he is believed to have produced. Lock up the cat . . .

It is wild and stormy here in Scotland. One of the most beautiful trees in my garden was killed by the wind yesterday (a lilac), that I loved for feeding the butterflies and sheltering the birds. The tree damage has been terrible, it is the wrong time of year for such ferocious winds. With the loss of habitat and shelter the birds are suffering also, and two blackbird fledgelings have already been bought to my attention, one past saving, the other one fine. Anyway with these and many other thoughts, I started a new series called, 'Lock up the cat and let the birds play'. I have to say, with inspiration thrown into the mix by Laura.

Apolline textiles from Paris

A wee skinny cat from Paris. Made by Parisian textile artist Apolline , I love the characters you can create with textiles, they always surprise you almost like children.
