 Valerie Dapadova is a French painter who's works are like rich complicated French recipes. Valerie uses collage paint and drawing in her mixed media compositions often depicting women in brightly patterned and coloured African style clothes, busy women running, catching and gesticulating.

Donald Baechler, has a visual vocabulary, like many artists, that he revisits. Here are some of his works using the face as his focus again you can see the layering of materials as he perfects his composition.

Irreverent, primitive, bold artworks by American painter Donald Baechler. Donald Baechler is a major contemporary American artist who's work has, during his career, explored many media and expressions as you would expect of an artist who's career has been extremely successful and who is very prolific. In these works you can see the layering of paint and thought as he has worked through different ideas and compositions.

"I'm always moving things around in paintings. Shapes are being moved slightly or radically or turned upside down. You can always see things happening underneath, well, not always but very often; I mean shapes, ball shapes or red lines, painted, overpainted. Adjustments take place over a long period of time. I choose white as the ground on which these adjustments would take place. It's a kind of a non decision, it's not a decision to use white. In fact it's not white. Mixed with yellow and black, and red at times, the white is variable, also white is colorless, it is supposed to function as a non-color." Donald Baechler

 Lait Yaniv makes illustrations from collaged newspaper that are like mosaics, Lait describes himself as a 'paper worker'. 
"Lived in Japan, travelled through Alaska and even spent six month in Denmark, but it doesn’t thrill me Half as much as collecting cutting and gluing newspaper cuts for a new illustration or a doll."

The second theme of Brian Kershisnik's paintings that I wanted to show you today is dance. Dance and romance and love great feelings to be able to hold on a canvas and Brian Kershisnik has achieved this with his weightless figures circling in the air, poetic and dream like.

Today I am exploring the portfolio of Brian Kershisnik, a beautiful portfolio with themes that resonate and paintings with observational titles and subjects that make me smile.
I am going to start with one of his reoccurring themes which is burdens. I particularly like the great big colourful burdens that are pictured and the way he has made something less visible in day to day life more visible through his imaginings.

Shino Suzuki

I was very excited on Friday to be given a parcel with a very recognisable 'Kickcan and Conkers' label on it, by my wonderful friend Jay Anderson who certainly has just the best timing for giving parcels. 

Well I was in a meeting, and I very carefully pealed away layers of washi tape and lovely paper and 'Edward popped out' completely disturbing the meeting (which was perfect).
Poor Edward has made a long journey from the South of France to Scotland, from the Mediterranean to the Forth and apart from his scarf he is not very appropriately dressed, but then most of the time neither am I as I try to pretend that I am in the Med and not freezing in Fife. 
However I will keep him safe and try to keep him warm as we now begin the long winter.

He (Edward) was made by Shino Suzuki who graduated from University College Falmouth in 2009 and was featured on the Selvedge blog but has since vanished from the Internet so if anyone comes across Shino Suzuki and can provide a link to her current work please leave a comment.

Gerald Rose 'Albert And The Green Bottle'

  

 

'Albert and the Green Bottle' by Elizabeth and Gerald Rose, came all the way from Canada this week to join my other favourite vintage children's books. I am so glad it did as it is a lovely book, illustrated by my favourite illustrator Gerald Rose. It is a story of a family who's son builds a boat to sail around the world. On becoming ship wrecked he writes a message in a bottle which is eaten by a giant fish, that his father subsequently lands and the search for Albert is on.
